Bum Genius?

Well, I bit the bullet and purchased cloth diapers. I've been going back and forth about it since I was educated by our friends the Dominguez-Hultgren family. I did know that cloth was much better for the environment, but I have this distinct memory of my mom wearing a bandana, bent over the toilet washing out my brother's diapers (I was 4 1/2 when he was born). I also vividly remember thinking to myself " I will never do that". However, these days things are much easier and cleaner and involve no bending over the toilet, or so I'm told. The ones I chose BumGenius supposedly adjust to all different sizes so they grow with the baby, plus they have handy velcro. It is an initial investment, but the estimate is that with disposables, you'll spend $2000 per child so $300 is looking good. Wish me luck, I guess!

you have to let me know how it goes- can you just put them in the washer, dirty? Or do you have to preclean them somehow?
I have similar memories of my mom as well.

WARNING! THIS IS NOT FOR THE WEAK-STOMACHED! :)
Pace has started solids so his poop is thicker now. I
have a spatula by the toilet that I use to scrape the
poop off the diaper. I don't try to get all of it off,
just what comes off with one scrape. His dipes have
washed beautifully still with two washes. A couple of
times Pace's poop has been more formed (has been
struggling with constipation poor baby) and then it's
really easy just to dump it out over the toilet - no
scraping necessary. So I imagine that it will get even
easier as he takes more solids and his poop is more
formed.

Oh, and just so you know, if you ordered white, you
will probably have poop stains. This can't be helped
unless you dry your diapers in the sun. The stains will
fade with washing though. Also, for some reason my
white bumGenuis diapers dye slightly blue after washing
(maybe because I'm washing them with a blue diaper pail liner?). At least it hides the poop stains. :)

Two things:
1. Do you experience more "blow outs" than you did with disposables?

2. If I'm paying $4 to do a double wash, is it going to be worth it financially? Or even break even?

I'd LOVE to try cloth... sigh.

Rachel, We're doing cloth too. It's great, and we found some cloth diapers made by a woman that are probably less expensive that the bum genius, if you need to get more. Call or email me some time if you have questions. Tjabe is just starting more solids too so I'll let you know how it goes, but I think it it much better all around that disposables. -Catherine and Sam
